Every bass guitar lesson is built from scratch. Nobody receives the exact same lesson plan. This approach ensures that each student receives material suited for their current needs and abilities. You will always be pushed just slightly out of your comfort zone so you are always learning and improving.

Now, that doesn't mean there isn't a basic curriculum to cover. Every student can learn everything about to be listed. How you get from point A to Z is what's unique. No strict courses here. You are a unique person, and deserve a unique lesson plan.
What you will learn with bass guitar lessons at Mile High Shred
All the fundamentals to start playing.
  • How to hold the bass.
  • How to pick with your fingers, and a pick if you want. Most bass players do tend to just use their fingers instead of a pick.
  • How to properly fret your instrument.
  • How to hold and play chords (yes, you can definitely play chords on a bass)
  • How to quickly play single notes.
  • How to read tablature (the easiest way to read guitar music)
  • How to tap and count rhythm.
  • You will be able to improvise your own bass lines, and even solos.
  • You will learn how to figure out the key a song is in by ear.
  • You will learn how to follow the beat made by a drummer and how to make the beat sound better by adding your instrument.
Techniques to be able to shred on the guitar, play heavy rhythms, and own the fretboard.
  • Hammer-ons.
  • Pull-offs.
  • Slides.
  • String bends.
  • Finger tapping.
  • Multi-finger picking.
  • Finger picking.
  • Chord Tapping
  • Arpeggios
  • Slap and pop basics. Yes, just the basics. Slap and pop is a technique mostly used in funk, and that is not what we specialize in.
How to play in a band.
  • We'll talk about what it's like to be in a band, what you can expect, and how to jam with others.
Any song you want. Whenever you have a song you wish to learn, just say the word, and we'll cover anything you wish.
Students have learned songs from various bands such as
  • Iron Maiden
  • Slayer
  • Metallica
  • Green Day
  • The Beatles
  • Guns N' Roses
  • Black Tongue
  • Meshuggah
  • Opeth
  • Black Sabbath
  • Arch Enemy
  • Avenged Sevenfold
  • Marilyn Manson
  • Nirvana
  • Offspring
  • The Coronas
  • And more and more and more!
Music theory applied to the bass guitar.
  • Various scales that show how music is built, and how you can make up your own solos.
    • Pentatonic Scale
    • Blues Scale
    • Extended Blues
    • Major Scale
    • Minor Scale
    • Harmonic Minor Scale
    • Melodic Minor Scale
  • An explanation of what modes are and how they work. The main modes we work with are:
    • Ionian
    • Dorian
    • Phrygian
    • Lydian
    • Mixolydian
    • Aeolian
    • Locrian
  • After learning how to tap and count rhythm, you will learn how to read standard rhythm notation.
  • Extensive chord theory will be explained. Because of the limited amount of strings on the bass, most of the chords learned will be performed as arpeggios. Understanding how chords are built and sound will allow you to write more creative bass lines, and understand what happens in the music you hear and play. Many of the chords/arpeggios covered are:
    • Power Chords (aka 5th Chords)
    • Major
    • Minor
    • Diminished
    • Augmented
    • Suspended 2nds
    • Suspended 4ths
