Mikehell 5-4-20 #2 (Upward Escape Motion/Downward Pick Slanting String Changing Bursts/Chunks)

7/23/2024

Picture
This was given to a student to work on changing strings while picking fast.

Because you are changing strings after performing an up stroke, using an upward escape motion (usually used with a downward pick slant) can be very beneficial in playing things like this nice and clean at fast speeds.

However, eventually you may end up picking so fast that you can't avoid hitting the string you're trying to leave. As long as your muting technique is solid, you can hit that string while going to the new string and you won't even hear the unwanted string being struck!

Would You Like to Build the Kind of Speed Shown in that Video Above?

If you'd like practice advice on how to push something like this to the max, there's a free eBook I put out called the Metronome Method, and the principles taught are how I got this lick beyond 300 bpm.

Alec M. 9-1-19 #1 (Scale Run Bursts Up and Down Four Strings)

6/26/2024

Picture
This was given to a student to help them with going up and down scales.

This drill, or exercise, goes up and down several scale shapes in the key of Am/C. Only the bottom four strings are used, and there's always a quarter note on the fourth beat.

Doing bursts like this can allow more speed to be developed instead of constantly playing.

To really get the most out of something like this, working up each individual piece as fast as you can before sticking everything together can really help.

You won't be able to play everything as fast as you can with one or two bars, but trying to play the entire thing 10 or 20 bpm slower than your max speed for one or two bars is a fantastic way of pushing your endurance, and maintaining the speed you've built.

Allan W. 8-6-20 #3 (Double Note Picking Bursts Up and Down All 6 Strings)

4/21/2024

Picture
This was given to a student to help them with picking fast while changing notes frequently and hitting all six strings.

Playing each note twice makes it easier to get a bit faster when climbing up and down the strings. Although it's easier than changing notes every single pick stroke, this is still quite challenging!
