 This was given to a student to work on going between the low E and A strings while picking fast. Alternating between the 16th and 8th notes was done to help improve rhythmic accuracy while changing the strings. Small bursts of notes like this can let a player hit speeds much faster compared to long sequences of notes that have no breaks in the picking. I feel that changing to the new string(s) is much easier to do when you play a quarter note on the new string. This can make it easier to tell if you made a good string change or not VS continually picking 16th notes.
