Evan L. 11-22-15 #2 (Polyrhythmic AND Polymetric? - Difficult!)

4/26/2024

Picture
This was given to a student to test their rhythmic skills!

Not only do we basically have a 4:3 polyrhythm happening (the chords in the first 3 bars are all evenly spaced, giving us 4 chords evenly spaced across 3 beats), we also have a 4/4 AND 3/4 time signature happening at the same time in the first 3 bars.

This is because the 4:3 polyrhythm strumming pattern begins again after 3 full beats, which makes counting this like a 3/4 time signature a good idea. However, the chords change each new bar, and each bar is laid out in a 4/4 time signature.

In other words, this is pretty dang hard!

The last bar is there just for added challenge.

The count for this rhythm is

1--a--n--e--4--a
--n--e--3--a--n-
-e--2--a--n--e--
1e-a2e-a3ena-en-

Evan L. 11-22-15 #1 (4:3 Polyrhythm + One Quarter Note)

4/19/2024

Picture
This was given to a student as an introduction to the 4:3 polyrhythm.

The rhythm is noted two different ways. The first way, I feel, helps the reader see where the chords are being strummed within each beat. The second way uses the 4:3 polyrhythm notation.

The first three beats of the bar contain the 4:30 polyrhythm. The quarter note is used to take a break from the fairly strange rhythmic pattern.

The count for this is

1--a--n--e--4---

Basically, ever chord in the 4:3 polyrhythm last three 16th notes long.

Allan W. 8-6-20 #1 (Polyrhythm AND Polymeter?!)

11/22/2023

This rhythm/strumming pattern is VERY difficult for most people. This was given to a student when he was nearing the end of his 16th note strumming work.

Not only is there a 4:3 polyrhythm being played (four chords evenly spaced across three beats), but there's also a polymeter going on. The strumming pattern begins again after three beats (in the first three bars). This basically fits the strumming pattern in a 3/4 time signature, while each bar is in a 4/4 time signature. This makes things EXTRA confusing!

The fourth bar completely breaks away from everything presented in the first three bars for added challenge.
