This legato exercise, given to a guitar student, is a bit more challenging than most of the stuff I give out to those new to legato (hammer-ons and pull-offs).
Because you are only picking the 1st of every 6 notes, your fretting hand will be doing most of the work. The pattern goes Pick - Pull - Hammer - Hammer - Pull - Pull

This was given to a guitar student to help them improve their picking speed while playing two finger/string power chords. The short bursts of picking can allow you to play fast for longer periods of time VS picking fast with zero breaks anywhere in the strumming.

This was given to a student to help them improve their alternate picking speed on the low E string. Playing in bursts of notes like this can allow you to play at higher speeds without wearing out your arm the way you would if you were picking with no breaks in the rhythm/picking.
